Thinking Travel

About

I tend to throw myself into big things.

In high school I wanted to be an exchange student. Did I find a nice 4-week summer program? No. I applied for a scholarship that sent me there for my entire 12th grade year.

Then I went to college. Did I put in my 4 years and then get a nice job? Nope. I got a Master’s. And then a Ph.D.

When Aaron and I moved to Michigan, and then later to North Carolina, did I plan a simple state-to-state move? Of course not. Both times we spent several weeks traveling around Europe and the U.S. before loading up the moving van.

I tend to ignore the small things. With me it’s gotta be BIG or nothing.

The thing is, small can be good. Small can be powerful. Small can quickly add up to BIG.

So I’ve decided that my 2010 is going to be all about the small. To help me recognize the magic in micro, I’m embarking on a project.

In 2010 I’m doing one new thing each week.

These new things I’m doing each week? They’re going to be small. Just one action I commit to for the week.

Why? Because there are many, many things I want to do, try, learn. The problem is that I make things so BIG that I often wind up overwhelmed rather than actually doing them. But by making my commitment small – just one new thing per week – I’m more likely to take action.

To keep me accountable I’m documenting my progress on Twitter and this blog. Your supportive comments are always welcome.

I’m fascinated by people who commit themselves to wacky projects so if you’re embarking on a personal project in 2010, I’d love to hear about it — just shoot me an email at cate  [@] thinkingtravel [.] com

A few things about me.

  • Since the middle of 9th grade, my name has been Cate (before that I was Callie, Kate, Kathryn, Katy and Kati).
  • I live in lovely Carrboro, North Carolina but I pine for Oregon, my homestate, every day.
  • I’m in love with my travel backpack and would gladly live out of it for a couple years.
  • I’m all about documenting things. I carry my journal, camera, and FlipCam everywhere I go.
  • You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and CulturallyTeaching.com. You can email me at:  cate (@) thinkingtravel (.) com

Why is this site called ThinkingTravel?

Because I registered the domain back in 2006 when I toyed with blogging about travel. I nearly shut down the site ’cause I stopped blogging here to focus on CulturallyTeaching. But I’ve decided to keep the name – and the blog posts – because ThinkingTravel is who I am. Just ask my husband, I’m always thinking about where to travel next.
